volunteering at Posta de la Laguna
La Paloma is a pretty calm pueblo located in the departamento de Rocha at the Atlantic coast in south eastern Uruguay. It counts 3500 inhabitants, and besides the beach with the old lighthouse - there is not too much to explore. The main street ends into a touristic beach boulevard with several hotels, bars and restaurants while the rest of the town consists mainly of living districts, surrounded by forests and beaches.
We stayed for almost 1,5 months a bit outside of the city in a truly amazing place - hostel Posta de Laguna. We helped during the day for 5 hours with general maintenance and several art projects in exchange for food and accommodation. Since the holiday season was already ending, it was more a house sitting job than the work of a hostel. Our main project was the design and production of several signs for the hostel which was actually more joy than work. We met some great co-volunteers and spent unforgettable days and nights together.
The weekends were usually off, so we used our leisure time to explore places nearby. For that La Paloma is just perfect. It is basically located in the middle between Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and the border to Brazil, so you can reach both places in less than 2 hours and the buses are going quiet frequently. Also the connection to the midland is pretty good, besides that the people are so kind that it is not a problem at all to find a ride while hitchhiking.
The directly surrounding area is quiet interesting as well. You can visit for example the Laguna de Rocha, a nice are to get in touch with the nature and wildlife of Uruguay. It is the home of over 200 different bird species, several fishes and mammals. You can walk through the lagoon for free but if you want to see the really interesting places it is advisable to book a tour. Since you cannot reach everything by foot, lots of fishermen in the nearby villages offer boat tours to tourists from 10€ per person. Moreover, you can find several charming hippie or fishermen villages like Cabo Polonio, Valizas or Punta del Diablo with beautiful beaches, artworks and small ferias with a huge variation of handcrafted products in less than one hour car ride. Besides that, La Paloma and its neighboring villages are awesome places for beach vacations. All the small villages along the routa 10 form an endless beach paradise, with our favorite spot in La Pedrera. So basically you have each day a different beach to hang out and enjoy the ocean.
We really enjoyed the relaxed vibes of these places and the company of all the nice people we met. Special thanks to Tabea & Stijn, Artur & Igor and of course the most welcoming host ever Fernando!
